Dear Andrew, family and friends of Marlena,
May Hashem comfort you in your time of loss. Marlene was a passionate woman, filled with a joie de vivre for family, activities, socializing and those she loved. We met in highschool and she always a vivacious independent strong character and an infectious laugh. May her neshuma make an aliyah in Gan Eden. BDE

An introduction to Judaism and what Chabad had to offer is how Marlene and I met. We formed a fast friendship and a bond, sharing experiences since then. I shall miss her and time spent together.

Marlene was one of the most heroic, intuitive and optimistic women I have met in my life. If Hashem did not grant her more years, it is because she is needed on another plane to share her knowledge Her Neshama will never die. I will miss her and our deep discussions about orchids, life and death.

We’ve just lost a soul sistah friend and fellow warrior. Marls, as I fondly called her, taught me so much about LIVING life, after also being diagnosed with cancer. She was so passionate about so many things. A woman of valour, and an incredible Mother to Andrew. Marlene and I were weather sistahs, and today it’s raining. These are all of our shared tears as we say goodbye to a beautiful soul. Rest In Peace Marls. Wishing Andrew and family a long and good life.

I am reading all the tributes here and on FB and private messages, and I am so deeply touched by the breadth and depth of Marlene’s impact on so many people.
Her kindness, generosity, intelligence, wit, determination, strength, joie de vivre - she was a force of nature! And how blessed I was to know her, to love her and be loved by her, and to learn with and from her.
Marlene will live in my heart forever.
May she rest in eternal peace and her neshama have an aliya to the highest of heights.

Baruch Dayan Haemet. Marlene, you will be extremely missed…your smile, your wit, your strength, your wisdom. You were a wonderful mom to Andrew and raised a special man. I remember coming to visit you and meeting Andrew, an adorable little boy who loved trains. Andrew, our condolences to you and the rest of the family. I know you will continue to make your mom proud. May she rest in peace and may you and your family be comforted by your many beautiful memories of her. Rest in peace dear friend.

Marlene reached out to me from palliative care. I run an org called One Last Wave Project that uses the healing power of the ocean to help families coping with the loss of a loved one. I etch their names onto surfboards and take them out into the ocean for a symbolic last wave as a way to forever memorialize them in a place they loved. We emailed back and forth for a while, she was such a beautiful soul. Marlene wrote this:
“I would love a ride on one of your boards. The ocean is my favorite place of all. The waves, the water, the power, the smells, oh how I long for a visit but I’m not allowed to travel now. I tell people I'm a palm tree not a pine tree. I'm an ocean girl and surfed many eons ago in my younger days, I used to live in Bermuda.”

I wanted to share that I am etching her name on our third surfboard this week and taking her out into the waves as she so desired to do.

Much love to the whole family
